Chinese New Year will not be complete without a few good rounds of Yee Sang tossing with beloved family members and good friends. Yee Sang has become such an integral part of Chinese New Year that restaurants are getting increasingly creative with their Yee Sang offerings. The Chinese believe that by tossing Yee Sang throughout the Lunar New Year, this would usher in good luck, good health, prosperity and happiness for the entire new year.

In the early 20th century, Chinese immigrants brought their love of fish and raw fish salads with them to Malaysia and Singapore. But it wasn’t until some 50 years later that chefs reinvented their own raw seafood salad to celebrate Chinese New Year. And henceforth, Yee Sang has been evolving from the usual raw fish to jelly fish, abalone, crispy soft-shell crab, crispy fried fish skin, scallops, among others exotic seafood.

Did you know that each condiment in the Yee Sang dish has an auspicious meaning? For example:
Raw fish significance in Chinese: Nin nin yao yu
Meaning: May you always have more than enough

Lemon / lime significance in Chinese: Dai kat dai lei
Meaning: Wishing you an abundance of good luck

Plum sauce significance in Chinese: Tim tim mat mat
Meaning: May your life be blessed with sweetness

As Yee Sang is regarded as such an important ‘good fortune’ dish, the ingredients that make this dish has to be fresh and of high quality.
